"The
Alewites" are a sect in Anatolia (Turkey) which
can be defined as the Anatolian muslims, a way of
Islam formed in Anatolian and Turkish traditions.
This is the only two episode documentary series made
on the subject analysing the Alewite traditions,
culture and belief which largely influenced the
entire Anatolian culture throughout its history.
First episode (Gerçeğe Hu/ Call of Reality)
examines the roots of the Alewite tradition and
belief in comparison with the Islam. The film
focuses on the current state of the Alewite culture
in various parts of Anatolia, their look at the
Koran and perception of God. The episode also
analyses what is a "cem ceremony" and how it is
performed.
Second episode (Uyur Idik Uyardılar/ They Awaken
Us While Sleeping) deals with the cultural
transformation in modern Turkey after the indepence
war, relationship with Atatürk, brothership and
immigration from the villages to the urban areas
which resulted with the traditional change. This
episode also shows the changes in "cem ceremony" and
"cem houses" in the big cities like Istanbul. The
film ends with the introduction of great Alewite
thinker/leader "Hacı
Bektaş-ı Veli" his philosophy and the annual
ceremonies take place at the mid-Anatolian city of
Hacı Bektaş. This is the only TV series produced in
Turkey on The Alewites and aired on Channel-D (Turkey)
and MTV-Nos (Holland).
